Arizona-Sonora Border Region

Unique opportunities and challenges

The states of Arizona and Sonora share a 361-mile portion of the U.S.-Mexico international border, have a long tradition of cross-border economic ties, and are experiencing increasing economic integration under NAFTA. The focus of this program area is on research that informs policy-makers, entrepreneurs and the public on matters related to Arizona’s economic relationships with Sonora and Mexico. Areas of special interest include trade, commodity flows, border infrastructure, tourism, border crossings, crossborder shopping, Mexican maquiladora sector, and transboundary industry clusters.

In the coming months, EBR researchers will be developing online resources to aid in the understanding of this unique regional economy.

EBR in collaboration with the University of Arizona’s Office of Economic and Policy Analysis is currently completing the 2009 update of:

"Tracking Progress Toward a Globally Competitive Regional Economy."

The updated 2009 version featuring a new assessment of regional initiatives is due to be posted on this website during the fall of 2009. Please check back! The project is partially supported by the Arizona-Mexico Commission.
