The Census Bureau released population estimates for states on Wednesday, December 21st. According to the Census, Arizona was the 8th fastest growing state over the last year with a 1.42 percent increase in population or 90,000 more people. The District of Columbia was the top fastest growing state with a 2.7 percent change followed by Texas (2.1), Utah (1.93), Alaska (1.76), Colorado (1.74), North Dakota (1.69) and Washington (1.57). Florida and Georgia rounded out the top ten. Along with being the second fastest growing state percentage-wise, Texas added the most numerically, growing by 529,000 people.
The Arizona Office of Employment and Population Statistics had released Arizona population estimates late last week. Their figures are significantly lower than what the Census Bureau has reported, and Arizona economists agree that the State Demographer figures are closer to the actual, which is that Arizona grew by less than 37,000 people. Initial unemployment claims were down again last week. The Labor Department stated on
Thursday that they were 4,000 lower, dropping to a seasonally adjusted 364,000. The 4-week moving average also came down. It is 380,250, the lowest it has read since June 2008.
The 2011 third quarter GDP increased at an annual rate of 1.8 percent from the previous quarter. The “third” estimate, based on more complete source data, was released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis on December 22nd and was lower than the 2.0 percent reported in an earlier release.
